Annotation

I was very unsure here because the slot with 13/7 8/5 was a definite option. It satisfies the rule of building against building and duplicates a lot of fours.
Maybe a factor towards the game move is that some reinforcement of the midfield is needed now that the midpoint is already stripped. Indeed, after the slot, whether White covers or not, Black will be happy if he escapes one checker, after which White's stragglers will see a lot of wood in front of them.

Annotation

The game move lessens the danger of being attacked, but that should not be one's main concern when sending a third checker back. A more positive thinking shows that with the connecting 24/22 White threatens to get the last checker past Black's blockade, and that when hit with a 4 he will have 6s to hit and 3s to anchor. I thought it would be close, but it isn't.

Annotation

I don't have the best of feelings for when to tempo hit on the ace point. The better board and White's outfield blot point towards the hit, but again, Black's three checkers back - two of them still hemmed in - suggest that Black's priority isn't the attack.
The tempo hit could work in sending a second checker back, Black won't mind too much if he is hit back, but it looks like the misplaced checker on the ace point will account for more than the temporary advantage of throwing White off balance.

Annotation

This type of decision is often difficult. Nobody would like the opponent to anchor on the only open point, so bringing two checkers in sight of the open point is natural, but that consideration must be weighed against how hard it is to extract the back checkers.
Here it looks like the 22 checker is hemmed in enough that he should be the recipient of the first rolled six. Note however that the game move wins the biggest number of gammons.

This also is difficult ! Where is it best to leave the gap ? The lower, the better chances one will have when the opponent anchors and one has to play backgammon again. The higher, the easier it will be to close it, since all outside checkers will be closer to the gap (there are also more pick-and-passes).
Here it looks like leaving the gap on the 4 or the 5 point is about equivalent, and it is rather about the best distribution Black can find.

Annotation

This is where big mistakes are done, and here is one. Leaving the five point slotted doesn't look overly dangerous, but GNU says that it hardly even wins more gammons than the safe plays. What's going on ? I suspect that more respect should be showed to White's prime. If we imagine for instance that Black gets hit and enters with a 1 or a 2, that checker won't be happy at all !

What I didn't like about the non-slotting plays was that one checker had to be killed. But after switching from the 6-point, the numerous pick-and-passes are enough to give Black excellent gammon chances as well as optimal winning chances.

Not a big mistake, but a wrong priority again. The game move gives Black two more covers for his 5 point. This doesn't quite make for the danger of staying hemmed in on the 22. I am still a bit surprised since after both moves Black pops out a checker with a 6 or 4 only (fives are to be used for covering).
