I'm just a lucky slob who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
My mother died when I was seven months old. At sixteen I quit high school, went to work in an Akron tire factory, and decided to become an actor after seeing the play "The Bird of Paradise". I toured in stock companies, worked oil fields and sold ties. Then reached Hollywood with the help of Portland OR theatre manager Josephine Dillon, who coached and (seventeen years older) married me. After bit parts I returned to theatre. The studio punished me for refusing an assignment; I was farmed out to Columbia where I won an Oscar . When my third wife died in a plane crash, a grief-stricken Gable joined the Army Air Corps, out of movies for three years. When I returned the studio regarded salary as excessive and did not renew contract. Free-lanced. |
